*2023 Update Caribbean Villas no longer does Trivia, however both Nauti Crab and Truck stop do and you can find them on Facebook.
First off, it’s been about a 14-year long trivia history between my friend Cindy and me. We have been on teams together and I have supported her as quiz mistress at many places on Ambergris Caye. So I was all in last week when she invited me to the popular Amber Beach Bar trivia night to play – located at Caribbean Villas Hotel.
Trivia Tuesday starts at 6:00 pm, (so mark your social calendar for tomorrow) and it costs $5 to enter with 5 or fewer players per team. The winners get half the pot and the other half goes to charity. Cindy generally does 3 rounds of 10 questions each.
This time, my team was named Fredmonkey in honor of the best cat ever – whom I never met. It consisted of Jana, her husband Matt (owners of the late Fredmonkey), and long-time Belize traveller Michael, who is here on another fantastic diving vacation with his wife.
A sample question from the evening: What type of fruit is also known as an alligator pear? To learn the answer and see a picture of my ginormous pair from the mainland, click through to my recent 29/7 challenge write-up.
We did not win but had fun and a decent amount of answers right and got lucky with a 4th bonus round. There were 6 teams playing with ample space between us all. The winning group that night was The Misfits, and they donated the whole pot of $105 to RRR Emergency services.
Of course, at the end of the night, it was a bit of a mad dash to get home before 9:00 pm curfew. I was supposed to get a ride with Cindy and her daughter Tinker. While key hunting, she suddenly realized her husband Andy, who had picked me up and dropped me at trivia, was home with cart and keys. There we were, 3 cinderellas turning into pumpkins without princes or glass slippers. I did, however, find my chariot. Gracious bar manager Monica got LeRoi to drive me home on her cart. I had not seen him in a long time and it was nice to catch up – he always puts me in a good mood.
Trivia # Two
As for the second trivia also at a south end beach bar, I have not been there, however, a few friends have gone. My Tuesday teammate, Jana Hill, was willing to fill you in about Toast trivia night on (Wednesdays) including a beach view picture.
Here is her review: This trivia night was started by a group of friends at their favorite down south restaurant (Lone Star) as a reason to have fun and support a neighborhood business during the slow times. After Lone Star closed, the group found a great new home at Toast.
It’s a gorgeous beachside bar off the beaten path, with the best happy hour prices and amazing food. For you long-timers it’s the old Island Time with the beachfront bowling alley.
The trivia goal is to be casual and have fun- sometimes it just feels like you’re playing a game with your friends in their living room… But sometimes it gets competitive, too!
It’s a $5 buy-in for the game. Mac Nachlas is the main trivia master- but we keep it fresh by having guest hosts. You can keep half of the pot, and the rest goes to a local charity. But almost everyone donates the whole pot to charity.
Big thanks to Toast Seaside Boozery – they match half of the pot to help the evening’s cause. Fun thing- The winning team gets to decide on next week’s charity. So far our $$$ has supported RRR Emergency Response, South Ambergris Caye Neighborhood Watch, and SAGA Humane Society.
I agree Michael, Trivia is a super fun option especially with our current 9:00 pm curfew. I am on my way to town now will see if the Chicken Lady is set up today instead because tomorrow is off the table.
We had a great time with Trivia. It’s a must do with curfew restrictions. We also had great time with you on snorkel trip last week. For chicken lady with Sunday restrictions she is set up on Friday. For $5US you can’t get any better street vendor food on the island (I know this cause I’ve tried them all.). Located and end on middle street at the circle.
In some cases 5th or 6th is a huge accomplishment when it comes to trivia. Signed not the team ringer ?
Covid has kept us away, but we always tried to make Trivia night at the Truck Stop. Our family of three never won first place, but we were proud to finish 5th or 6th against some great teams.
