Endurance Training and Big Beach Party

sailing in belize

I remember when Andrew Milner founder of the San Pedro Sailing club was sitting in our backyard years ago telling us about his dream to teach local island kids the art of sailing and how his plans were to find the Olympic quality sailors and get them to master a skill that will allow them to travel worldwide. His dream was not without its struggles but he stuck with it and has come to help the kids win lots of trophies, and learn good sportsmanship and life skills. His write up below shows just the kind of quality he and the sailing school are dedicated to providing their kids. Further below that, you will find details on their upcoming big beach party fundraiser happening this Sunday at Amber Beach Bar and Grill located at Caribbean Villas Hotel. It will be loads of fun and there are tons of great prizes to win on as you will see when you make it to the list.

Endurance Training

Sailors often forget the endurance part of their training required to race for a solid hour-long stretches at a time. When young, lightweight sailors jump into performance adult boats (Lasers) for the first time this becomes very apparent. So as part of the Laser sailing lessons conducted jointly by the Belize Sailing School, the San Pedro Sailing Club and with the generosity of Rose Alcantara, donating her time, we put them through a Pilates programme 2 nights a week.

Pilates develops inner core strength which enables the sailors to “hike out” in their boats for long periods of time. This is our Laser simulator showing what hiking out looks like. The aim is to stay in this position for hours at a time.

Thanks to Rose Alcantara, the kids have already noticed such an improvement, not only with the endurance in remaining in such an uncomfortable position but they all walk around with their midriff’s exposed showing off their newly acquired 6 packs 🙂

Pedro’s Birthday Bash Fundraiser benefiting the San Pedro Sailing Club & San Pedro Animal Foundation

  • Sunday, June 7th, 2015 at AMBER Beach Bar & Grill (at Caribbean Villas Hotel) starting at 11:30 am.
  • Silent Auction items, Raffles, 50-50 draws, Chinese Auctions
  • Live Music by The Mighty Cool J’s
  • Beach BBQ, Pig Roast, Drink Specials
  • Sailing
  • Games and fun for children of all ages!

Come out and bankrupt Peter and support worthy causes

prizes include – 2-night stay at Cayo Espanto, 2 Night Stay at Chan Blue Hole Day Trips, Mainland Tours, Local Diving, Catamaran Sailing, Bar tabs all over town and much more…

With the sailing club, the funds are not specifically to send Kevin to Antigua for the Optinam 2015 sailing races – it’s to generally raise funds for the club. The big thing is that 88% of the sailing kids in the club are local Belizean kids, not expat kids (there is a perception that the Sailing Club is elitist for Gringo kids, it’s not!) I believe it will be 60% to Sailing Club and 40% to Animal Foundation but that might not be carved in stone as of now.

All money generated by the raffles, silent auction and Chinese auction will go to the causes, plus a % of sales from the bar (not sure the exact number at this point but a percentage will definitely go).

The Animal Foundation is set up to assist low-income residents who cannot afford whatever procedures their pets may need. In a case of need, the Animal HOSPITAL will discount their prices 30% off the top, then the Animal FOUNDATION will make the decision if the people qualify for assistance – in the case that they do the Foundation pays the bill completely.

It’s really for things like pets being run over, or other emergency situations.

Love Taco Girl Blog @LaurieNorton! I've been reading this blog since I started visiting Ambergris Caye in Belize almost... 10 years ago. It is filled with helpful up-to-date information and recommendations that I wouldn't necessarily find on my own. Laurie Norton's knowledge and extensive network on the island provides her with the ability to share perks/discounts/coupons with her readers, which come in handy year after year. Things on the island change daily - new businesses pop up constantly and LaurieNortonstays on top of these developments. Whenever I plan my return trip to the island, I always check her blog first - and I recommend you do the same. Trip Advisor ain't got nuttin' on Taco Girl!read more

Laurie's blog is my official “go to” source for tourist and local information on San Pedro. Of course, it’s... always nice to see her guides on “what to do” in San Pedro, but I also appreciate her “insider” advice and human interest stories on what it’s like living as a local on the island. There is so much information it's amazing! Thank you Laurie!!!read more

I’m so pleased to see tacogirl's blog on Google. Laurie's blog is my official “go to” source for tourist and... local information on San Pedro. Of course, it’s always nice to see her guides on “what to do” in San Pedro, but I also appreciate her “insider” advice and human interest stories on what it’s like living as a local on the island. I especially enjoy her guest articles, providing a different perspective of all things San Pedro. Her tipping quide is a classic, and don’t forget her Tropic Air flight code and on-island discounts. You’re not up-to-date with what’s going on in San Pedro if you’re not regularly reading tacogirl's blog.read more

Do yourself a favor. Read this BEFORE any trip to San Pedro - Ambergris Caye or Belize in general. Not saying “do... what everyone else says”, but Laurie has frank and honest info which will make your stay in country a little more fun, a little more informative, and often at a great cost savings. Best thing: it’s unbiased, honest, and factual. Personal note: thank you for your personal tailored help in answering mine (and my wife’s) questions.read more
