Happy Holidays and Off Season Accommodations Deals

Belmopan Belize

Happy Holidays wishing everyone a safe and fun St Georges Caye day.

For those of you who want a bit of Belize history, Wiki to the rescue… St. George’s Caye was settled as a town in 1650, and was the largest settlement in what was at the time British Honduras in the 17th century and 18th century until its importance was eclipsed by the growth of Belize City. From 3 September through 10 September 1798, the British settlers fought and defeated a small Spanish fleet sent to drive them from the area; this battle is marked as a national holiday in Belize each September 10th as The Battle of St. George’s Caye.

This year I am celebrating a quiet day at home and enjoyed a very brief rain shower this morning.

This time last year I was celebrating the well known September 1oth holiday and 50 trips around the sun in style. I decided to use luxurious, peaceful adventurous and clever for travel adjective goals. I hit the mark with a 5-star Jungle Canopy View Tree House. Low season is a great time to score off-season accommodation deals in Belize and I got this one for about half the price, 1/4 actually (very clever 😀 ) always cheaper to travel with a friend. JK and I also got a deal on our meals for the entire stay, I love dining at Caves Branch as you never know who you will sit next too. We met plenty of great people over the course of our 4 days there.

It was an adventure just getting to and from our room alone, there is nothing like being 200 feet above the jungle canopy and we definitely got our daily cardio going back and forth to the dining hall. Aside from the people and the buffet, I loved watching a daily aerial acrobatics butterfly show and patiently waited for them to take a rest break so I could catch a few still shots.

I wanted to go enjoy night time in the jungle up close and personal, my friend, who is a bit of a self-proclaimed princess, declined. Since it was my big 50, I decided to make my nighttime walk a disco party forgoing my transistor radio and enjoying the symphony of bugs as my soundtrack. It was thrilling and a bit creepy at times but overall,  I greatly enjoyed playing with my disco flashlight and making artsy patterns on the leaves and occasionally catching sight of the wildlife around me. If you like the thought of a night jungle tour then click through to see some cool wildlife from the official one, previous time I stayed at Caves Branch with my friend Aimee.

Half price luxury comes with all the full price benefits. Here are a few of the great towel art sculptures that were placed on our beds daily. My Favorite is still the crocodile that was on my bed when Aimee and I stayed at Caves Branch in a ground floor cabana. These ones are still worthy of admiration.

Of course, the rest of our room was absolutely gorgeous and could have comfortably slept a few more – perfect for family vacations with a bunk bed. I especially loved the view from the rooftop deck and outdoor shower which was perfect as my friend didn’t, so I did not have to share. 😀  Room shots courtesy of Caves Branch, the outdoor shower was from a pic I took. The mountain view from the upper deck was fabulous. I could not get enough of the fact that we were above tree height in some spots.

A few more random pics of things I loved about Caves Branch that trip including amazing nature and a fantastic horticultural tour with well-known botanist Ella Barron, the pool, a delicious cheese plate, and a custom-made birthday cake.

You still have time until November to source out offseason resort specials and start looking for a flight. Flight finder deals can be found at the following three options: Skyscanner, Google Flights, and Momondo.

Another great app travelers will enjoy, a handy Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport Arrivals Tracker. Click on a listed flight and you will get great up to date information on the scheduled and estimated time of arrival among other useful things. Since we live in a smartphone generation, you can also get FlightStats App on Google Play or Itunes.

Don’t forget to use your in-country flight code horizon when you book on Tropic Air – click through on Big Numbers for Belize Tourism & Health Care to find out the benefit in doing so.

Hello! I have been following this website for a few months now since my husband and I decided to go to Belize this December. It’s very interesting and helpful….so thank you. I have a few questions that I hope you can answer. We were planning on going to Ambergris Caye for a week but I am now second guessing that decision because I have read a ton of recent reviews saying the stench from the rotting sea grass is unbearable. Is this true? If so, do you think it would be gone by December 2018? I have also read there are not really any real beaches in Ambergris Caye except Secret Beach? About how far from downtown San Pedro is Secret Beach? We were planning on staying at Sunbreeze Suites so if you know where that is, would you know the distance to Secret Beach from Sunbreeze Suites? Lastly, due to my concerns, do you feel a different island would be better suited for us? We will likely go snorkeling but also want a beach within walking distance that we can go to on most days. Thanks in advance for taking the time to respond to these questions….I really appreaciate it!

Thanks for enjoying the benefits to my site Nicole.

Just like weather sargasso is pretty impossible to predict, anyone’s guess what it will be like in December. The smell can be unbearable depending on the wind and sometimes surprisingly you smell very little when you would think you would smell it a lot. End of day is worse usually as it is the plant rotting that smells. – https://tacogirl.com/difference-sargasso-seagrass-in-belize/

Secret beach or any west side one accessible by boat (there are people who will do that for a day or half day trip)

Sunbreeze Suites is right in town and secret beach a few miles north-west it is a 30-40 min drive, keep in mind you will likely doing 15 mph on a golf cart.

As far as alternatives, have you considered Caye Caulker? Here is a post with a good video in it to show you more of that island.- https://tacogirl.com/jesse-james-style-adventure-caye-caulker/

Love Taco Girl Blog @LaurieNorton! I've been reading this blog since I started visiting Ambergris Caye in Belize almost... 10 years ago. It is filled with helpful up-to-date information and recommendations that I wouldn't necessarily find on my own. Laurie Norton's knowledge and extensive network on the island provides her with the ability to share perks/discounts/coupons with her readers, which come in handy year after year. Things on the island change daily - new businesses pop up constantly and LaurieNortonstays on top of these developments. Whenever I plan my return trip to the island, I always check her blog first - and I recommend you do the same. Trip Advisor ain't got nuttin' on Taco Girl!read more

Laurie's blog is my official “go to” source for tourist and local information on San Pedro. Of course, it’s always nice... to see her guides on “what to do” in San Pedro, but I also appreciate her “insider” advice and human interest stories on what it’s like living as a local on the island. There is so much information it's amazing! Thank you Laurie!!!read more

I’m so pleased to see tacogirl's blog on Google. Laurie's blog is my official “go to” source for tourist and local... information on San Pedro. Of course, it’s always nice to see her guides on “what to do” in San Pedro, but I also appreciate her “insider” advice and human interest stories on what it’s like living as a local on the island. I especially enjoy her guest articles, providing a different perspective of all things San Pedro. Her tipping quide is a classic, and don’t forget her Tropic Air flight code and on-island discounts. Do yourself a favor. Read this BEFORE any trip to San Pedro - Ambergris Caye or Belize in general. Not saying “do what... everyone else says”, but Laurie has frank and honest info which will make your stay in country a little more fun, a little more informative, and often at a great cost savings. Best thing: it’s unbiased, honest, and factual. Personal note: thank you for your personal tailored help in answering mine (and my wife’s) questions.read more
