3 wheel cargo bikes now available on Ambergris Caye – Carry 100 lbs. of Cargo While You Get a Workout!
Imagine being able to get your daily exercise without having to schedule time for it or pay any gym fees. Now imagine being able to run all your errands, including grocery shopping at the same time. Add to that, the fact that you are saving money on gas, electricity and taxi fare as you exercise and run your errands. Sound too good to be true?
It’s not if you’ve got a cargo bike. Transport or cargo bikes are very popular in Europe, where bike riding is encouraged by governments who recognize its benefits. Riding a bike 30 minutes 6 days a week cuts lifetime risk of both stroke and heart attack by 50%. As well as lowering the risk of type 2 diabetes, arthritis and certain forms of cancer. Cycling also offers an answer to 3 of the biggest problems facing us today, the high cost of energy, climate change and obesity.
Belize is the perfect place to ride a bike for transportation with our great year-round weather, but the only problem is you can’t carry very much on a regular bike even with a basket.
Whereas with a cargo bike you can carry your groceries, kids, pets, tools, laundry, 5 gallon water bottles, luggage, or anything else up to 100lbs, and get low impact, core building exercise at the same time. Cargo bikes are also great for mobile vendors and resorts who want to offer their guests more freedom than a regular bike.
According to Dalton Gonzales of Corozal based Belize Cargo Bikes:
“We started out getting a cargo bike for my grandmother years ago after she had an accident on her 2 wheel bike. She wanted to stay active, the 3 wheel design made it safe and easy for her to ride even at her age. She is 87 now and still riding a cargo bike!
So many people asked us if they could buy the bike that we started importing them. We will be delivering fully assembled 3-wheel cargo bikes to Ambergris Caye. The bikes will arrive in San Pedro via the Thunderbolt from Sarteneja. Our customers can show up at the dock on their delivery date and ride their new bike home. We’ve done it already and it worked beautifully the bike was rolled off the boat and ridden home.”
The bikes are made by Schwinn, imported from the U.S. and have a large rear basket with a 100 lb capacity with space for an additional front basket. All bikes come complete with 6ft high safety pennant for easy visibility in traffic.

Road test would be fun John. I agree they will be super handy here Emily.
Those cargo bikes would be super handy on the island! Glad to see they will now be available. A much better choice than yet more motorized vehicles.
Think they should let you have one for a week to road test!
