Colette and I were chatting on the coconut phone this morning and she asked if I had seen the south beach video. After letting it run through once I was able to watch uninterrupted, and thought it was definitely worth posting to help get the message far and wide.
South Beach Belize is a mega development planned for the Southern tip of Ambergris Caye Belize. It borders the world renowned Hol Chan Marine reserve. This video was produced by the citizens of Ambergris Caye for sustainable development, and aired on local television to highlight the dangers associated with this, as well as similar projects planned for Ambergris Caye.

Thanks also goes out to The Ambergris Caye citizens for sustainable development who are behind the video. They are a local group who’s aim is to inform the public of the effects that non sustainable development will have on our island.
I am a Belizean, and I care about the environment, our biodiversity and the maintenance of ecological balance. I trust that most persons blogging here are doing so objectively and without bias and such your opinion is valuable and duly noted. However, the presentation leaves much to be desired and the interests behind it are simply charlatans looking to protect their pockets with no true concern about the reef or the marine environment. South Beach is merely an idea today, the reality is that there are more than one thousand homes on San Pedro without proper sewage facilities. Raw sewage has been seeping into the sea and contaminating the reef, decimating fish specie for more than ten years. South Beach proposes to lessen this damage by implementing a sewage treatment facility. Let the truth go forth- there can be a balance between developments of any size and nature. It is not the size of the development that makes it dangerous or not, it is the methodology utilized in implementation.
Good for you for getting this out there so more people are aware of the ramifications of unsustainable development such as this mega resort project. Progress is inevitable. I don’t think anyone believes that Amergris can or will stay the same forever. However, it’s already over burdened infrastructure and its delicate ecosystem must be considered above profit. Let’s hope that a public outcry will outweigh the money that will inevitabley end up in the poiticians’ pockets.
Hi Statia Girl no petition as of yet but if one gets going I will let you know. As to how you can help maybe writing a letter and I could try and find out whose hands to get it to or even post it here.
How frightening – is there any type of petition to stop the developement? We are divers so anything to do with saving the oceans for future generations is near and dear to our hearts. How can we help from Canada??
Yes Janet – it is a little to close for comfort to such an important wildlife area.
Wow – that is extremely frightening! STOP South Beach Belize!!
It is sad hopefully if we all keep focus and work together we can help prevent such things.
That makes me want to cry. I guess the developers have never heard the fable about the goose that laid the golden eggs.
