Many of you will remember Dr. Dolittle from childhood days and later the 1988 movie starring Eddie Murphy. The good doctor was known for being able to communicate with the animals. Recently, my neighbor Barb earned that nickname when she started getting a range of Belize Animals near our house to fall in love with her after talking to and feeding them.
There is one grackle in particular that actually comes looking for her and talks to her most times she is in the pool. He talks to her and lets her know he is there and then comes down from the mangroves.
For those of you who are not familiar with grackles, they are in the blackbird/oriole family and from a distance can sometimes be confused the crow even though they are smaller in size.
Unlike crows, grackles have bright yellow eyes. We keep hoping Barb’s has the same behavior patterns as crows as they are known to bring “trinkets” to people who befriend them. So far no luck though but it is still fun to watch the two of them chattering away on a sunny afternoon.
Pics below show our friendly grackle hanging out on pool float and stopping for a drink while doing a walk around the pool ledge as he often does.
Then there are the neighbors pets, they were all too happy when Barb picked up where my friend Dennis left off and started feeding them, after his Casa Mango vacation ended.
Now they get all excited every time we come and go, wanting attention and food. Often they hang out on the steps leading to Barb and Joe’s place and if they could talk, I am sure they would say “I want in that house and I wish this nice lady would adopt us”.
