Belize Health Notice

The Center for Disease Control has issued a medical alert about a highly contagious, potentially  dangerous virus that is transmitted orally, by hand, and even electronically.  This virus is called Weekly Overload Recreational Killer (WORK).  If you receive WORK from your boss, any of  your colleagues or anyone else via any means whatsoever – DO NOT TOUCH IT!!!  This virus will wipe out your private life entirely.  If you should come into contact with WORK you should immediately leave the premises.

Take two good friends to the nearest liquor store and purchase one or both of the antidotes – Work Isolating Neutralizer Extract (WINE) and Bothersome Employer Elimination Rebooter (BEER).   Take the antidote repeatedly until WORK has been completely eliminated from your system.

In all seriousness I am following Dr Al’s recommendation and still taking some time off to get my health back in order after my freak vanilla poisoning incident and lowered immune system. I have been working with Dr Al a lot this past week on the coconut phone and he has been talking me through making some major changes in order to re-balance myself. He has also had me undergoing a lot of blood work lately to make sure that my rebellious body is ok.

Since so many of my readers are wanting to move to Belize and health care is a topic that often comes up in peoples email, I have an interesting and comparative analysis article from the Sudbury Star flavored by Dr Al. with his offbeat sense of humor. He has been both a healthcare patient and provider in 3 countries: Canada, USA and Belize and answers the question – So if you get sick where should you do it?

Here is some pricing in Belize dollars on various medical tests and procedures so you can compare medical treatment costs with Belize and where you live.

Cost of my recent blood work – most of it was processed at the lab here only 2 of the tests had to be sent to Belize Medical Associates Lytes and TSH – the results were in the next day.
$115 bzd – Electrolytes Na, K, Ci
$130 – Thyroid stimulating hormone
$18 – bzd Ethrocyte Sed Rate
$25 bzd- CBC bloodwork
$22.00 bzd Bun
$38.00 bzd Creataine

I have known at least 3 people to get a colonoscopy here one even did it while she was on vacation because the price was better and Dr Lerida comes highly recommended. Cost of the pretreatment medication required $200 Treatment $980 bze I believe the 3 initial samples that had to go to the lab were about $21 bzd each to get processed.

I will leave you with recent pics from the day I walked to Grand Caribe – well I got as far as Jolly Roger and 2 different people offered me rides. The second Bunch was actually heading right there as they own a condo and dropped me off right at Cowboy Doug’s door.

Those lab prices are about 1/3 rd higher than the mainland. The medical system is two tiered public(free) through the hospitals and some rural clinics. And private which has better trained MD’s and very short wait times. Most drugs can be obtained without Rx which is not always wise but convenient if you have a pre existing problem. The main deficiency in Belize is emergency or trauma care. 911 is unpredictable and an hour or more ambulance wait is not unusual. So don’t get seriously injured. And maybe have your appendix removed before relocating. The Northern Medical Speciality Clinic in Orange Walk Town has the finest specialists anywhere esp. obs/gyn and peds. It is private with an 8 bed hospital with homecooking and a/c rooms for 300BZ/night approx. They may have a scanner by now as well.
