Adventures by Land and Sea

One of the many great things about living on a tropical island is that you can be on an adventure within minutes. In this post, I decided to give you a taste of driving north on roads less traveled and a Coral gardens sail and snorkel where we ended up with a hitchhiking Cowboy on our way home.

As for the story behind the first set of pictures, I asked to ask my friend Sperry and he was happy to share his thoughts about our drive. Sperry is coming from the perspective of never having been too far from town center on any of his visits.

I recently took an unusual a day trip up north of San Pedro with tacogirl. To my surprise, she was more adventurous than I could have hoped for and what I thought would be a short trip just over the bridge to Palapa Bar for a cold one,  turned into a trip that I will always remember. The sometimes harrowing road which she traversed so easily lead us to places that dreams are made of. The quietness the serenity and the breath taking beauty just left me in awe of my surroundings. There are no photos that could ever depict just how incredible this place was. I was pleasantly surprised that the further north we drove the clearer the waters became. The colors from mid green to cyan to deep deep blue (completely indescribable ).

Thank you, Laurie, for an experience of a lifetime – Sperry.

North Ambergris Caye

My next adventure came in the form of a last minute invitation to go sailing. That is the fun part of island life, it is easy to be spontaneous. I got lucky that Shirlee was in charge of her friend Jeff’s guest list on one of the Beymer boats Ecologic Cats (now in Roatan). After all who wouldn’t feel lucky drinking a fresh Pina colada (I’m still an alcohol drinking virgin) and some tasty treats? Their sweet habanero sauce on cream cheese is always a crowd favorite.

For this aquatic road trip, we headed a bit past Hol Chan to a snorkeling spot known as Coral Gardens. When the snorkelers were done we set sail for Caye Caulker and lunch. Even though I opted to relax on the boat over going in the water, I was famished. So Kendall’s idea of a giant sandwich at Paradiso sounded good to me and it tasted great. We got in a bit of a walk around the island after lunch and it was not long before we found everyone else had picked up a hitchhiking Cowboy Doug who had flown into Caye Caulker on a Tropic Air island hopper and was ready to catch a sunset sail with us back to Ambergris Caye.

For kicks, those of us that stuck close to the boat or stayed on it enjoyed watching Caye Coffee Paul dive off the boat. He was quite entertaining and everyone that did not snorkel enjoyed socializing with.
