Exodus Water Taxi from San Pedro to Corozal and Sarteneja

My editor Shirlee decided to try the newish water taxi and wanted to share her experience for travelers wanting to go between San Pedro to Corozal or make a stop at Sarteneja. Personally I would rather fly however, there are some people who are scared of smaller planes and opt to travel by boat when in Belize. Some people just want a fun boat ride because flying is not an easy option where they live.

Exodus Water Taxi

Exodus Water taxi began operations on October 22, 2019. It runs opposite of the Thunderbolt schedule, meaning it leaves San Pedro at 7:00 am and returns from Corozal at 3:00 pm, stopping in Sarteneja both ways. Below is the Exodus boat, Sabrina docked in Corozal.

Different from the Thunderbolt, however, Exodus utilizes the International Water Taxi Terminal in San Pedro. I arrived at approximately 6:20 because I wasn’t sure how many others would be on the boat and I wasn’t exactly sure of the procedures. It was still so new that the guy who meets people outside of the building to take the luggage and to tell you where to go immediately asked me for my passport. When I informed him I was only going to Corozal, he and said, “ Oh, I don’t need your passport then. Ha, I guess I should have asked that first”.

The Exodus staff were sitting outside as well and were easily recognizable by their shirts. I got my ticket and proceeded inside the terminal. Everyone must pay a BZD 2.00 “facility fee” – basically for washroom use. They take your ID, your name is typed on the receipt, and you’re asked you to keep it available.

All that only took a few minutes, so I had plenty of time to walk around the departure area and snap some photos.

7:00 am came and went, and they didn’t call us to the boat. The Captain seemed to be waiting for something, which in fact, he was. At about 7:06, a lady in a uniform who works for the terminal walked toward the boat with a clipboard in her arms and shouted that is was boarding time for passengers to Corozal.

As I walked towards the boat, the lady asked for me to bring out my receipt, which she checked again before I boarded.

The boat is quite a bit smaller than the Thunderbolt. The seats are the long bench type along the wall on each side of the boat. They don’t have any cushions, which is a little hard on the touche. The round trip fare is $85.00 BZD.

Exodus doesn’t have a booth set up in Corozal Town, but it’s still easy enough to buy a ticket (with ID) at the dock. I like that on weekends when school is out there is a young boy that plays music. Most of the songs were in Spanish, it was awesome to hear him as we left Corozal. I usually watch a downloaded Netflix movie when I travel, but this time I took the headphones out of my ears and listened to the music.

The two-hour trip is just slightly shorter in length because the Exodus boat can go through the cut by the old Aquafina (now Turtle Island), which cuts off about 7 minutes from the Thunderbolt route.
