Eco Friendly Belize

Ongoing Ambergris Caye Clean-up Campaign

Please help keep the ball rolling that was recently started by the Belize Tourism Industry Association San Pedro Chapter started with the assistance of American Crocodile Education Sanctuary (ACES), Oceana Belize and San Pedro Town Council. Over four-day massive Ambergris Caye clean-up campaign, over 150 volunteers collected more than 900 bags of trash and 744 square yards of garbage. A total of 151 vehicle/truckloads delivering both bagged and loose garbage to the Transfer Station, located south of Ambergris Caye – Source: San Pedro Sun News Paper.

It took an incredible amount of supplies and manpower to do this job and we are nowhere near done making Ambergris Caye Green and Clean. Thank you for supporting our lovely island with a donation, we have secure storage lined up. Please watch the tacogirl Dark Side of Ambergris Caye Directors cut full version to see why this is such a worthwhile cause to support.

By using links on this page (no matter what you buy in the end) you are also supporting my blog and helping me to keep giving you more of all things Belize. So remember whenever you shop on Amazon please do it via tacogirl.com. It is greatly appreciated.

Easy Donation Drop Off Downtown San Pedro

I have arranged for an easy drop off at your convenience. 12 Belize Lifestyle Boutique in downtown San Pedro on Tarpon Street is willing to accept donations. Store hours 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM Call 670-5272. The shop is a stone throw away from both San Pedro Airports and located in the very purple two-story Linda Plaza above Seaduced by Belize which is listed on Google maps.

Taking out the Trash on Ambergris Caye

One of our biggest issues was flimsy trash bags that ripped and there were nowhere near enough. We kept running out. Here are a few examples I chose but if you know of a good brand or feel like looking for other options please feel free to click any of the links below and comparison shop. Remember to use ACES in the Amazon Smile program.

Eco Friendly Belize

High density, heavy-duty black garbage bags with 55 to 60 Gallon capacity. 150 count is $47.49 and they have an extra 5% off coupon happening right now.

Eco Friendly Belize

High-density clear garbage bags with 40 to 45 Gallon capacity. Cost $52.24 and currently, an extra 5% off coupon is available on this item.

More Sturdy Gloves Please

Calling in an order or a few1000 of more sturdy gloves. Because of the size of the job, we could not keep up with glove supply. The demand came between new people showing up to help and hazardous material blowouts sending them to the glove graveyard. Here are several options to choose from.

Eco Friendly Belize

Jorestech palm dipped latex coated seamless knit work gloves (Extra Large) $19.99 12 pack.

Eco Friendly Belize

MaxiFlex Ultimate 34-874/L Seamless breathable knit nylon lycra glove with full hand nitrile coated micro-foam grip – 12 Pack $65.00.

Eco Friendly Belize

MaxiFlex nitrile micro-foam grip breathable gloves. Size-XL 12 Pairs for $65.00.

Eco Friendly Belize

Kaygo nylon lite polyurethane safety work gloves, gray polyurethane coated, knit wrist cuff, $20.98 12 pack.

Eco Friendly Belize

Size large, $25.99 for 12 Pair, Diesel protection extreme duty gloves.

Balaclava UV Protection

Many of the guys were wearing t-shirts on their heads and or around their mouth and nose area for sun protection and to avoid the stench of years old garbage. After seeing this I decided that the most generic dust sun options are needed. However, if you feel to search and find funky fishing balaclavas and build a stash of those to protect the hard-working trash guys feel free. There are many fun funky fishing neck gaiters and cool looking fishing face masks too. They also come in handy for personal sun protection if you plan to do any tours where you are on the water or out in the sun for a while.

Ambergris Caye Clean Up Campaign

Balaclava UV protection face masks $11.99 for a 3 pack. These full face masks are ideal for sun and stinky air protection. Breathability, absorbency, wicking, durability and abrasion resistance. Can be worn a few ways.

Ambergris Caye Clean Up Campaign

Thindust Summer two pack $13.99 dust sun UV protection face and neck gaiter.

ANSI First Aid Kits

Due to the fact that many of the cleanup crew were barefoot, wearing flip flops or slides, there were some injuries. First aid kits are an important part of ongoing Ambergris Caye Clean Up.

Phoenix Resort Belize Staff

Hard Case First Aid Kit 326 Pieces $34.99 Exceeds OSHA and ANSI Guidelines and is good for 100 People.

Phoenix Resort Belize Staff

Leonard 50 Person First Aid Kit, Class B, Type 3 ANSI. For a broader range and quantity of supplies to deal with more complex injuries or high-risk environments.

Phoenix Resort Belize Staff

First Aid kit 291 piece bag $24.95. Packed with hospital grade medical supplies for emergency and survival situations.

Larger Items and Shipping to Belize

For those who want to help but are not planning a trip or want to donate an item that will not fit on your luggage, stay tuned, a shipping option for larger items needed is being worked out immediately with Belize Freight. It will consist of items such as rakes, pitchforks and trash grabbers as well as bulk size options for a couple of the items listed above.

Battery Recycling in Belize

I purchased an item because it was clear to me that there needed some sort of battery recycling in Belize. After putting out a call for dead batteries I found that people had been stockpiling them but never knew what to do with their growing pile. Or the other side of the coin, those that would toss them in the garbage and cringe wishing there was a better option than putting hazardous materials into the ground.

Please consider donating a container to be placed countrywide and help us keep poisonous batteries out of the ground.

5 quarts was the size I bought to place at 3 Ambergris Caye hardware stores, though as you can see from the left side pics for all 3 sizes, this item was so needed as I have already collected over 60 lbs of batteries since January 2018. These batteries will get properly packaged then barged to the mainland, put in a blue barrel, get concreted and then be placed in a hazardous waste cell at Mile 24 on the mainland.

5-quart battery recycling container

• Compact design ideal for office or counter-top placement.
• Decals help to encourage users.
• Removable screw top for easy access with strong, comfortable, top and bottom handles make for easy carrying and removal.
• Clear, thick, long-lasting polycarbonate body.
• Funnel opening keeps hazardous materials contained with less potential for spillage should it accidentally get knocked over.
• Cushioned inside rubber base protects the contents and reduces dropping noise.

Eco Friendly Belize

10-quart battery recycling container

• This mid-size model works for many places without taking up too much space.
• Well, designed top and bottom handles for transport and screw top for easy contents removal.
• The sturdy polycarbonate body is transparent for battery display.
• The funnel-shaped opening keeps batteries contained should it accidentally be knocked over.
• Cushioned rubber internal base helps contain hazards and reduces noise by softening the battery landing.

15-quart battery recycling container

  • Larger size 15Q Battery household battery recycling bin provides a safe hazard disposal solution that is suitable for busy environments where battery waste accumulates quickly.
  • Transparent, thick polycarbonate body displays hazardous contents without weakening the structure.
  • Funnel top lid with a narrow opening which allows small battery deposits while minimizing the risk of other unwanted waste being deposited by accident.
  • Cushioned rubber internal base reduces noise by softening the landing and helps contain hazardous materials.

I just returned from my trip to Belize in mid-June 2022. I had been planning the trip weeks / months in advance and... Laurie (taco girl) wasextremely helpful in preparation for my trip. Her intimate knowledge as an expat who was ONCE a tourist, really helps because she is able to share first hand knowledge of how a tourist can explore Ambergis Caye like a "temporary local". An example of this, was she recommended 2 yoga classes for my wife to enjoy while on vacation that we would not have known about otherwise and the class was far better than a class arranged by a hotel, as you get the local experience not a staged one. In addition, she was helpful in providing recommendations for dinner and sharing some discounts she has arranged with local retailers. Reviewing the taco girl blog and reaching out to Laurie is like having a tour guide, but more important a tour guide that KNOWS Belize.read more

It was my first time visiting Belize and San Pedro so naturally I had a ton of questions when it came time to planning... the travel. Taco Gril's blog was an invaluable source of information for all the travel questions in Ambergris Caye. I was able to learn a lot of basic information, as well as many tips and tricks. In addition when I reached out to Taco Girl for advice on finding a local photographer and a restaurant recommendation, she was very quick to respond and gave me many helpful suggestions. She also provided a lot more information from a local's point of view, which was much for valuable than than a typical guidebook. Thanks to her helpful suggestions we were able to celebrate my daughter's birthday at a nice restaurant, and had a great photo family session with a local photographer. I'm very thankful for all her resources and knowledge.read more

ABOUT ME

I took the plunge and moved to San Pedro Town on the Island of Ambergris Caye, off the coast of Belize, Central America. Originally from Canada, I made the life-changing move to escape winter for good (in 2006) after one three week vacation. If you have any questions or want Belize help planning and booking, please feel free to contact me.

SPARKING MY DESIRE

A few childhood memories that shaped my desire to move to Belize from a young age. Sailing in the Virgin Islands, seeing a rainbow out the window of an island hopper as we flew from Virgin Islands to Puerto Rico, Christmas in Hawaii and many trips to Florida.
