Belize started off with a bang especially on Ambergris Caye with our annual sky show. This year was 25 minutes of fireworks fun. For those who wanted to start their new year’s fitness resolutions, the annual Krem New Year’s day Cycling Classic. Starting in Corozal Town and ending in Belize City.
While not an official holiday in Belize, large sections of the local population observe January 18 as a day to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Junior Day civil rights activist. a symbol of everything that makes this country stand out as a nation where people are judged by their words and deeds rather than the color of their skin or their origins.
Camp Belize Jan 22 – 28th and Jan 29th – Feb 4th. This popular event has been drawing people to Ambergris Caye for years to enjoy some great music by Jerry Jeff Walker and other musicians.
A weekend of underground electronic music, this year marks the 3rd annual Sisimito Sessions held in Placencia Belize Jan 28th and 29th. Put on by National Institute of Culture and History, Belizean Society of Composers Authors Publishers (BSCAP) and Placencia Village Council PVC and Sisimito Records, a Belizean-based electronic music label, featuring Central American produced techno and tech-house music. In addition to the evening DJ show’s, they will have a daytime workshop for local artists interested in learning about techno and tech-house production. For all the international carnivores out there mark your calendars and book your flights for the 6th Annual BBQ Cook-off on February 6th, 2017 at Estel’s by the Sea. A great way to do some community service by sampling 12 grill-masters and voting for people’s choice as well as helping the Sunshine Foundation make a difference in Belizean children’s lives through scholarships and education.
For cycling lovers, a 217 mile race Valentine Cycle Race from Feb 11th -Feb 14th. The course starts in San Ignacio, finishing in Belize City.
Fiesta de Carnival occurring at the end of Feb, the week before lent (March 1). This event is super fun and a little bit messy so if you opt to partake make sure to wear something you do not mind trashing. Mostly kids and a few adults enjoy running around downtown San Pedro getting covered in paint and sometimes egged. In addition, you can enjoy Carnival Comparsa groups dancing around town in their colorful costumes raising money for good causes.
Take your vitamins and train well if you are considering La Ruta Maya Belize River race held at the beginning of the month. If you are not up for full out fitness you can still enjoy being a spectator at this event and cheering the racers on. The 179 mile race starts in San Ignacio in the Cayo District and the participants travel along the Macal and Belize Rivers and ending at the Swing Bridge in Belize City.
Baron Bliss Day also known as National Heroes and Benefactors Day. Countrywide celebrations take place in honor of, Baron Henry Edward Ernest Victor Bliss, known for philanthropy. The main festivities take place in Belize City, which hosts a regatta with sailboats of all sizes at the Baron Bliss Lighthouse.
