United Against Abuse

“United Against Abuse”

A two day workshop organized by Belize Natural Energy Trust, The Word at Work and The Women’s Department to be held at Banana Bank Lodge January 22nd– 23rd, 9am – 4pm.

“Violence against women is a global issue that hinders victims from being productive members of society, women have always played a major role our society…by nature women are nurturers and statistics show that in many cases that they are the sole providers in single family households. BNE Trust is about unlocking potential and empowerment and it is with that objective that it embraces the opportunity to be involved in this workshop.” Deborah Sewell, General Manager of BNE Trust

The workshop is designed to share some of the challenges being faced by women who are victims of domestic violence and other abuse with a view to existing laws, intervening organizations and other resources available to victims in Belize. This forum is an opportunity to bring together a cross section of service providers and victims in an effort to produce a protocol and recommendations that set out a system, a means of operation and activities that will include legal, educational, health and cultural measures. This is the beginning of an ongoing collaborative effort between all participating agencies for long term, sustainable access to technical assistance as well as other resources.

There are eighty registered participants representing a cross section of service providers country-wide. Facilitators will include representatives from the Women’s Department, the Police Department’s Family Violence Unit as well as Ms. Joanne O’Brien, Founder of Direct Abundance, and Natalie Persad, Family Violence Counselor both of Toronto, Canada.
