If you’re a globetrotter looking for the next country to explore or simply in need of a relaxing vacation, Belize would be it. Among its many charms and natural attractions, Belize weather is one thing that draws people to the tiny country. The Belize climate can be defined as sub-tropical, which boasts of an average temperature of 29°C/84°F annually. Belize owes its enviable tropical climate to its unique location (between 16° and 18° north latitude).

The Belize climate ranges between hot and humid, from May to September, to cool which is often between December and March. Thanks to the coastal sea breezes, the hottest and most humid months tend to seem cooler, while the colder months are quite comfortable. The temperature in Belize rarely falls below 16°C/60°F. Temperatures tend to range between 21°C/ 70°F and 32°C/90°F.

Belize Seasons:

Beyond rainy and dry, here is how many of us jokingly refer to our seasons.
Windswept – March to May
Rainy and Hurricane – June to November
Skeeter – August to October (thrown in there due to rain)
Brisk – December to February

Regardless of the seasons, the Belize climate is generally mild and comfortable, making it suitable year-round.

Best Time to Visit Belize

Many travelers would weigh-in that the best time to go to Belize is often during the dry season, between February and May.  Year-round visits have their benefits, especially if you are planning a move or want to take in specific events like the big San Pedro Lobsterfest Block party held annually in June.

The high season, with the most visits to Belize, is generally between December and January, therefore, accommodations are more expensive. If you are traveling on a budget, try and plan your trip in the low season. May and June are the perfect windows to travel cheap and experience a less crowded Belize. The only downside to visiting during this time is the rain, although generally, it tends to be short heavy bursts.

Another great and reliable weather site is Windfinder.com. Click through for the wind, waves & weather forecast for Ambergris Caye and San Pedro. This is the official site that the Belize Sailing Center uses and they even offeered my readers an inside tip that works if you are already here. The weather algorithm they use is 98%, but the day it’s not matching our current weather, you know the 5 day forecast will be wrong. Example: when they forecast 14knts and it’s not happening, you know the 5 day forecast after is wrong. It will be will be corrected the following day when new weather data is updated.

Thanks for reading my blog and congratulations on your upcoming milestone Stephanie. May is still okay for most places being open, and the weather is generally quite nice.

My husband and I are trying to plan a trip to San Pedro for our 10 year anniversary next year. We are looking at sometime around the last week of May. Is that a good time of year to visit? I don’t mind it being a little off season (less crowded), but I also don’t want to go when half the shops/restaurants are closed. Also, how is the weather normally around that time of year? We’re hoping it’s early enough in the season to not have too much rain.

Thanks so much for your great articles. They have been really helpful in trying to plan our trip!

Courtney Sargasso levels are heavier right now. Just like the weather it is impossible to predict it will be like in May. I really cannot tell you regarding picking a different time of year to avoid it. All I can say is personally Sargasso is something I would not change a date over if I was planning to go somewhere where it was an issue.

  7. Courtney says:

We have a trip planned for May however we have received warnings about the Sargasso in the water and on the beaches. In doing some research it looks like there was a big issue back in 2016 as well. what are your thoughts on the sargasso? Is it better to come a different time of year to avoid it?

For ATM that is a full day tour and it is best done when staying on mainland. I do not know any companies that offer doing it starting from Ambergris Caye.

I emailed you info for 10% cart rental discount along with current food and shopping travel coupon codes.

    Dear Taco Girl,

I am retired by post polio from flying airplanes, sailing islands, scuba, tennis, etc. and find myself in a wheel chair. My wife and I want to explore moving to Belize from Beaufort, SC. Can you recommend any wheelchair accessible hotels or places for us to stay in while we look around for a place to live?

Your help would be greatly appreciated. I enjoyed your article in Moon’s Living Abroad in Belize about Laid-back living on Ambergris Caye.

    Thank you,

    Richard Warden
