I am so all over the map today between studying computer stuff – reg daily work and still trying to fight off this stomach bug. This week I have heard Mike was also feeling a touch of it and Jeannie got hit big time. Paul told me that she said this was the worst she had felt and hers lasted 2 weeks. I am just crossing my fingers that I am good by the time my medication finishes which is 2 days away.

Sunday on Monday

Catching up on yesterdays pictures today. Walter rented a golf cart and tool Gillian – Paul and I for a spin. I had a bit of work to get done for an upcoming comparison shopping post between Caye Caulker – San Pedro and Playa Del Carmen so Paul and I went off to check a couple of local shops.

We spent the rest of the afternoon between Lazy Lizard – nap time and lunch at Lil Pedro’s before catching the 3:50 water Caye Caulker taxi home.Neither of us had ridden the double decker boat before so it was fun to sit up top and enjoy the view. When we got to San Pedro we made a pit stop at Fidos on the way home to meet Liz and her crew who are down from Texas. It was fun laughing on the beach and watching the beautiful sky colors as dusk set in.

Mini vacation

Went to check out Lil Pedro’s Caye Caulker. After all that has gone on last week with me being sick and Paul working like mad and sorting through some frustrations – we definitely needed a vacation to just chill out and be away from it all. It was fun hanging out with Walter – Gillian – Raul and Trevor. I really like the new place it is right in the heart of the hustle and bustle of Caye Caulker and the waterfront view is amazing – we played backgammon and watched people and boats passing by. In the afternoon Walter had lined up some live music with Garifuna Drummers. They were a big hit and it was funny cause we all ended up at Barrier Reef sports bar later and talk of the drummers playing at Lil Pedro’s was the word on the street – news travels even faster on Caye Caulker than it does on San Pedro ha ha.

If you have not done so – I highly recommend a tour of Caye Caulker by taxi. We had Orrie drive us around and he was a great guide showing us different parts of the island and pointing out various landmarks. You can reach him at 626-1307 or 624-0355. Cost $30 bzd

Revovery Diet

When thinking of living in the tropics one thing to consider is electronics. They tend to go on the fritz in weird ways. Take my last two phones for example – the volume went so I could not hear the person on the other end. The one before that was reverse and I could hear the other end fine but they could not hear me. All 3 phones were different makes and models.

Another piece of electronic equipment we have troubles with are t.v. remotes. We buy the rca brand and I have mastered how to auto program it. With our last two remotes it was the previous channel button and the sleep setting option that went out – both features we use regularly.

We did find a new one for a good price $12.95 – but the buttons were different color and I knew somehow I was taking a chance. Had I looked a bit closer I would have realized that that remote was new old stock and it still had the option to program it to your vcr. Another reminder of why you need to be extra vigilant when you shop here in Belize.

When I opened the box and read the manual I found out that I had now taken place of the auto function – crap. This meant I had to press the button up to 200 times instead of just holding the remote and waiting for the machine to do it’s thing an then step in and hit enter when the tv turned off. The other downside is that if you sometimes get careless and hit the wrong button you some how deactivate the programing. If you are lucky tv button will bring it back – if not your fate is pressing the damn button again 200 times.

Below is a pic of my recovery diet as I try to get my stomach back on track. Veggies cooked with coconut oil and a bit of cumin. Damn stomach bug $%^&*@!

Sleepless in San Pedro

With the state of late night tv I am so glad I am not prone to insomnia. It’s 4am and I can’t sleep so I thought I would get up and write for a bit and try to get some work stuff sorted. Even though I am feeling like Bart Simpson must have when he swallowed jagged metal Krusty-O included in the box as a prize – I can tell that the stuff Dr Lerdia prescribed is helping. Drinking some apple dehydration salts now she said they will help restore potassium to my system. The taste is very peculiar like drinking liquid apple with a pinch of salt on it.

Wondering how Pedro’s Caye Caulker grand opening went. Paul said hopefully we will get to go over on the weekend if I am up for it.

Just noticed the time 5am going to go channel surf for a bit in the scary land of late night infomercials and hopefully catch a bit more sleep before the sun comes up.

Will likely be back later.

Had a very interesting dream this morning. Lori Jackson was having at art show at Pedro’s. She had made all this really cool framed art work and it was was like all the frames were mini plasma screens so the art work had motion to it. I remember standing there telling her what a great job she had done and that I could tell how much work she had put into it then I woke up.

On the mend

I always said that starving to death would be one of my least favorite ways to kick the bucket. Add constant stomach pain to that – definitely not a good way to go. I can’t think of a worse fate than feeling hungry and not being able to eat very much cause of excruciating stomach pain. Scratch that a whole bunch of worse options just came to mind after typing that. I am just grouchy and avoiding food commercials and sleeping a lot.

I know a few others on the Island have been going through similar experiences lately if you care to share your insights and doctors costs and cures please leave comment.

Called to see if Dr. Lerida would be in this morning so I could go get checked out and her assistant said she was headed to Belize City for the day and I could try again tomorrow. Luckily she called back and said plans had changed and she was going away tomorrow so I could get myself there by 11am or 3pm. I thanked her and said see you in 20 minutes.

After checking me out and asking what my symptoms were she confirmed it was a bug caused by something I had eaten or from water. Pretty sure that it was something I ate Sunday night – ugh.

Out of the loop

I got taken down late Sunday night by a bug or something I ate not sure which as no one else got sick. Thanks to Joanne – little Erin and Cindy for the stomach settling stuff they gave me and to Paul for putting up with my bellyaching – literally. The only thing I have been able to eat since Sunday evening is freezie pops. Starting to feel slightly more normal.

Joanne and Erin just got all their bags and headed to drop them off at the airport before running last minute errands around town. They will fly to Belize City Early so they can meet Tina for lunch. Little Erin says after 2 months here she is ready to go back home and see her friends again and enjoy some winter. Joanne of course does not want to leave and will be the one with the tears as the plane takes off – she is already planning to make it back here in April.

Sat Night

Went to Lola’s Pub last night to see Cori and have sliders with a side of fresh cut fries – yum. The potato skins that Cindy and Clement ordered looked good too. Afterward we went down to the skydiver jump video party at Playa Lounge met up with Jack – Bill – Becky – twocandream – azbob and Don. It was fun hanging out with everyone and watching all the jump footage on the wall.

So far looks like it will be a quiet day. Jo and Little Erin went to the mainland to go cave tubing.

Possible I will write more later – trying to shake off a headache.

Hurricane Jo and little Erin are on their way over. They are done their dog sitting and will stay here at the taco shack until they leave Tuesday. Heather popped me on coconut phone this am to tell me to warn Jo there is snow in her future. She was also telling me of the initial planning stages of composting toilets waste water gardens for San Mateo and her research on what plants have have the ability to help detoxify soil and return it to a healthy balance.

I am sure I will have more to say later so stay tuned.

Been working for the last 5 hours on my Categories (accessible from drop down menu on right hand side) I have removed 411 and transferred all posts that were listed there to to Useful Information. I have also changed Fundraiser to Fundraising – it makes more sense to me. Time for a break while the house is quiet. Jo and little Erin are out snorkeling.

Off to the Races

Off to the races this morning. Between work – dropping little Erin off at school at 8:30 – getting Cherie to Tropic Air for 9:30 and Cindy & Clement to Jacks for snorkeling we were not able join the Otters for Breakfast at Estel’s. We did catch up with the tale end of it and got to enjoy a few peoples company over scrambled eggs and fried Jacks.

It is a sad news evening on Ambergris Caye tonight - Belize business magnate Sir Barry Bowen Dies in plane crash along with 2 other adults and two children p passed due to a plane crash. For more information please see San Pedro Sun and Ambergris Today. Sincere condolences to all who have been affected by this tragedy.

I will leave you with an update email I got from Joanne of Direct Abundance today. She was on the mainland for a conflict resolution seminar. As you can see in the email – things are going great and moving right along for Direct Abundance.

HI Folks!

A quick email to let you know what has been happening in our campaign to Unite Against Abuse.

As most of you are aware, we have presented workshops in Belize, including schools, the Chamber of Commerce, The Belize Central Prison, and other community locations. In addition we have been gaining media awareness through radio and television shows and local newspapers.

We are forming a “International United Against Abuse Foundation”
have 6 members, and are awaiting a word on a Chartered Accountant to join us. We are expecting a launch of this Coalition in June, after all the formalities have been taken care of.

Currently Cynthia Ellis is spearheading the Foundation, with Tina Rorrer from TWAW, myself, Anna Silva (Executive Director of Mary Open Doors) and Antionette Moore (Lawyer) being the other members.

Our goal is to bring National Attention and Resources for eradicating Domestic Violence to Belize with this coalition.

Cynthia Ellis is currently seeking a representative from each district, to form a sub committee – to gain support for counselling and shelters in each district. Each area will be responsible for gaining the support of the community in which the services will be provided. Miss Ellis will find a representative from each district to locate empty buildings in each district that are owned by the government or the churches to develop 6 safe houses on the mainland.

We will also try to gain support for Mary Open Doors through donations drives. I have connected Miss Ellis and Miss Silva with Theresa Oostra, Executive Director of Rural Human Services in California. Hopefully she will be able to help Mary Open Doors and the other shelters with donation drives and fundraising activities.

Grants have been applied for to start a structural building of a Shelter in San Pedro and we are hoping that through the District Committees that we will be able to get the other 4 shelters built.

The San Pedro Sun has offered media attention, or any kind of advertising we need to get fundraising activities in place. Mel Pas, President of the Lions Club, will also support fundraising activities and we will see if there is any support we can obtain from Lion’s International.

Today we did the morning show on Plus TV in Belmopan, and they have invited us back to gain more media exposure, creating awareness, and informing them of any progress we are making.

We have applied for Domestic Training grants, so that we can continue to raise awareness throughout the country. We have been asked to present in more schools and do on-going work in the prison. In addition we are taking requests from schools and businesses both in the private and Public Sector to do workshops and awareness sessions. If you are aware of schools that would like the workshop presented to their staff, please contact me.

We will be doing a newsletter and sending it out to keep everyone informed of the progres and news on Domestic Violence in Belize.

Things are moving rapidly here, and we appreciate your continued support and hope that we will be able to form many valuable partnerships in our efforts to eradicate Domestic Violence.
